Course Title: Backhoe and Front End Loader Operator Training
Course Category: Safety

Course Description
This course was specifically designed to provide "aspiring" equipment operators (backhoe and front end loader) with practical, classroom-based instruction, coupled with thorough, hands-on skill training. Classroom sessions will cover machine principles, operating principles, trenching and excavating, and special safety considerations. Hands-on field training will utilize actual equipment (backhoe and front end loader) and incorporate extensive, individualized instruction. Each registrant will have ample opportunity to train on each piece of equipment with close supervision, developing specific skills (through practice exercises and skill drills) varying from performing pre-operational inspections to loading and trenching. Class size is limited to optimize this learning experience.
Who Should Attend
Any water utility (operations and management) or organizational professional interested in becoming proficient in backhoe and front end loader operation may register for this class, noting that completion of "Excavation Safety: Are You a Competent Person?" is a prerequisite. First time aspiring operators are welcome! Those seeking to become licensed backhoe/front end loader operators in Massachusetts (Department of Public Safety, Division of Inspection) must apply separately to take the examination (practical), and pay an additional (non-refundable) fee. Prior to taking "Hands-On Backhoe and Front End Loader Operator Training," each registrant must complete the NEWWA seminar "Excavation Safety: Are You a Competent Person?" or equivalent. This seminar provides a strong background in trenching/excavation, soil analysis, protective systems, hazardous atmospheres, excavation site safety and hazard recognition. OSHA regulations are stressed throughout. The seminar also incorporates a field training exercise and proficiency examination. Please be certain to indicate on the registration form when (dates) you completed NEWWA's "Excavation Safety: Are You a Competent Person?" or equivalent.
