NEWWA's Cancellation Policy:
If you cannot attend a NEWWA event you have registered for you must contact NEWWA in writing two business days prior to the start of a program to request a refund or credit minus a $30 administrative fee. If you contact NEWWA within one business day you will be charged 100% of the original course registration fee. This charge is non-refundable and non-transferable. Written refund/credit requests made for special circumstances will be considered if received within 2 weeks from the start date of the program. Credits issued are valid for 6 months from the date of the program.

Title: Iron and Manganese Removal
Description: This course will help participants describe characteristics of Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn); describe the value of removing Fe and Mn; describe basic treatment methods and processes for removing Fe and Mn; perform basic calculations relating to Fe and Mn treatment methods; discuss chemical application and feed methods; and identify potential problems and corrective actions.
Who Should Attend: This course is designed for operators. It will be especially useful to new or less experienced personnel but will be of interest to seasoned operators, supervisors, plant managers and entry level engineers who are interested in expanding their knowledge on the subject area. The seminar will focus on fundamental concepts related to iron and manganese removal. It will be beneficial to managers and/or supervisors who will need to make or influence decisions about selecting the proper technology/techniques and/or upgrades for iron and manganese removal.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes: The goal of this class is to allow participants to be able to develop a more detailed set of options to allow for the removal of unusually high amounts of dissolved iron and manganese in their water supplies. By learning the commonly practiced methods of such removals, a well supported decision can be made by learners as to what would work best for their needs. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Describe the physical and chemical characteristics of Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn); List the aesthetic and economic value of removing Fe and Mn; List at least three basic treatment methods and processes for removing Fe and Mn; Explain the steps of the process of aeration and how it is able to remove Fe and Mn; Describe how a greensand filter removes manganese; Perform basic calculations relating to Fe and Mn treatment methods; Identify the most commonly used chemicals and feed methods to remove iron and manganese; Describe how the use of membrane filters can remove iron and manganese; and Describe the procedure of setting up and completing the “Permanganate Demand Test.”
Learning Outcome/Assessment Method: Learners will be required to complete an objective style assessment and obtain a score of 70% or higher to demonstrate attainment of the learning outcomes. Learners will select responses, then guided by the instructor, will correct and grade their assessment. Individuals will be required to submit the graded copy of their assessment to the instructor at time of dismissal. If anyone receives a score below 70% they will be required to meet with the instructor and review the assessment to clarify full and complete ability to meet the learning outcomes before they are dismissed.
