NEWWA's Cancellation Policy:
If you cannot attend a NEWWA event you have registered for you must contact NEWWA in writing two business days prior to the start of a program to request a refund or credit minus a $30 administrative fee. If you contact NEWWA within one business day you will be charged 100% of the original course registration fee. This charge is non-refundable and non-transferable. Written refund/credit requests made for special circumstances will be considered if received within 2 weeks from the start date of the program. Credits issued are valid for 6 months from the date of the program.

Title: Hands-On Backhoe and Front End Loader Operator Training
Description: This course will provide aspiring equipment operators (backhoe and front-end loader) with practical, classroom-based instruction coupled with thorough, hands-on skills training. Classroom sessions will cover machine and operating principles; trenching and excavating; and special safety considerations. Hands-on field training will utilize actual equipment and incorporate extensive, individualized instruction. Each registrant will have ample opportunity to train on each piece of equipment with close supervision to help develop specific skills varying from performing pre-operational inspections to loading and trenching. Class size is limited to optimize the learning experience.
Who Should Attend: Any water utility (operations and management) or organization professional interested in becoming proficient in backhoe and front end loader operation may register for this class, noting that completion of “Excavation Safety: Are You A Competent Person?” is a prerequisite. First-time, “aspiring” operators are welcome.
Pre-requisites: Prior to taking “Hands-On Backhoe and Front End Loader Operator Training” you must complete the NEWWA seminar “Excavation Safety: Are You A Competent Person?” (or equivalent). This seminar provides a strong background in trenching/excavation, soil analysis, protective systems, hazardous atmospheres, excavation site safety and hazard recognition. OSHA regulations are stressed throughout. The seminar also incorporates a field training exercise and proficiency examination. Please be certain to indicate on the registration form when (dates) you completed NEWWA’s “Excavation Safety: Are You a Competent Person?” (or equivalent).

Learning Objectives/Outcomes: Classroom instruction will cover Regulation Governing Operation; Machine Principles; Operating Principles; Inspection Procedures. Classroom Session Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of your classroom training, you will be able to Match the learning program agenda and key learning goals and objectives; Sequence the instructional materials as a follow along guide to the learning program; Identify the Massachusetts State Licensing Examination procedures; Describe the scope and application of the Massachusetts Hoisting License Regulation (520 CMR 6); Identify the requirements of 520 CMR 6 for the operation of loader/backhoes; Identify the special requirements of 520 CMR 6 for excavations and use of loader/backhoes in hoisting applications.
Learning Outcome/Assessment Method: Upon completion of the morning classroom segment, you will complete a written self-assessment of what you have learned. This assessment is comprised of thirty multiple choice questions drawn directly from the information presented in the class. You will complete the assessment on your own. There will be twenty minutes allotted for you to complete the assessment. Once the instructor confirms that everyone is ready to begin a review of the assessment, they will read and review each of the questions in order and noting the correct answer and you can grade your own progress. Answers will be discussed along with references to the sources of information in the MA regulations. You will be permitted to keep your self-assessment for review and reference after the class.
