As challenges in water treatment are met, new ones rapidly emerge. Preparing to meet future challenges requires advance knowledge and a clear understanding of the past. It also requires planning for practical application of that knowledge.

NEWWA’s 2017 Water Quality Symposium will focus on both old, and new drinking water contaminants. The keynote address will provide a historical review on the impacts of at-the-tap lead concentrations on public health, and how utilities can incorporate this perspective into current water works operations. From there, participants will hear a regulatory update on lead in drinking water, resulting from elevated lead concentrations in the Flint, Michigan, water system, as well as a summary of the results of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts comprehensive school at-the-tap lead sampling program. The morning will end with a case study on how changes in daily operations can unknowingly affect at-the-tap lead concentrations.

The afternoon program will begin with a regulatory overview on emerging contaminants and present occurrence data for unregulated contaminants identified under the Unregulated Contaminants Monitoring Rule (UCMR3). The second presentation will present a foundation for the use of advanced oxidation processes (AOP) for organic compound control. Two case studies, where full-scale treatment systems have been constructed and are now operating to remove some of the contaminants identified under the UCMR3 [specifically 1,4 dioxane and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS)] will end the day.
